StubDog.com Helps Houston Area Artists

Art in LA, Culture in LA by Trisha

Today StubDog.com, the one-stop online source for deeply discounted entertainment options to fit every personality and budget, teamed up with the Houston Arts Alliance to support artists and art-related projects in Southeast Texas negatively affected by Hurricane Ike. While StubDog.com continues tracking fresh, affordable entertainment prospects for theatre-goers in Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston to enjoy at half-price, they are teaming up with clients and online customers to help Houston’s arts community recover from the ravages of the hurricane’s aftermath this fall.
For a four-week period beginning today (November 12-December 12, 2008), StubDog.com will donate half of the profit — $2 for every ticket sold — in each of their three markets: L.A., Houston & Dallas/Fort Worth.
StubDog.com is offering clients the opportunity to sell additional tickets from which 100% of the sales will be donated to the Hurricane Ike Arts Relief Fund. A small icon will denote the tickets these generous clients are offering in support of Houston’s struggling arts community.
Joining StubDog.com to offer support are:
A Noise Within, ComedySportz LA, Westside Eclectic, Chance Theatre, The New LATC, and Write Act Repertory Theatre.
If you were looking for an excuse to go to the theatre, here it is! This season has been a particularly devastating hurricane season, and every little bit helps for each and every person affected by all the hurricanes this year.

Spring Awakening: Angst, Lust, Rock & Roll

Culture in LA, Entertainment in LA, Music in LA by The HEAD

The buzz in LA is Spring Awakening– now running at The Ahmanson Theater thru Dec 7.

  • Here’s some simple advice: Buy tickets now through Goldstar before it’s too late

Spring Awakening combines teen angst and lust with a post-punk rock soundtrack into a play that could just be Hair for the current generation. This show is energetic, and covers the range of taboo: suicide, masturbation, teen pregnancy, homosexuality, repression, rebellion… with a sense of passion that makes it clear that musical theater is alive and well.

The ensemble of Spring Awakening puts forward the show with just the right edge, spearheaded by an amazing performance from Kyle Riabko as the lead Melchior. His voice is pitch-perfect, particularly in the haunting “Left Behind” ode to his best friend Mortiz. Blake Bashoff (formerly of “lost” fame) does a mesmerizing portrayal of the Mortiz, the confused and “lost” youth with amazing hair (possibly an omen of the 60’s classic?). And Christy Altomare is shokingly sweet and innocent as Wendla, with another beautiful voice as well.

I’ve noticed this show’s impact on youth culture in LA, and it’s making me happy. The two teens in my house are totally obsessed with the music and worship the cast. The underlying messages are positive, even if they are veiled in tragedy.

Spring Awakening is a love-rock musical that’s highly recommended. Don’t miss it.

Westwood Mormon Temple Under Attack

Culture in LA, Politics in LA by AMG

The Westwood Mormon Temple closed yesterday after an envelope was received containg a unidentified white substance.

The same thing happened at the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. The FBI was called in to investigate the matter.

The Mormon Temple has been under attack by protestors of Proposition 8. The Mormon Temple was the single largest contributor to the Yes on 8 campaign to strip constitutional rights of marriage to gays and lesbians.

The shit’s hit the fan for CA gays

Culture in LA, Politics in LA by AMG

Straight from the headlines of CNN.com:

Los Angeles; No more licenses for same-sex marriages

LA County halted the issuance of marriage licenses first thing this morning, due to the sickening outcome/passage of Prop 8. Although the divorce rate in the U.S. is at an all-time high (in the 60th percentile) … somehow Ron Prentice, chairman of ProtectMarriage.com, thinks that this is a victory for the sanctity of marriage, when in fact heterosexuals are the ones who have stripped the word of its most potent form. The fact that the country is denying it to the LGBT community, is only making the community want it even more .. and trust me, they will get it. While the election of Sen. Obama was a milestone in American history, the passage of Prop 8 marks the antithesis of progress and change.

Start your engines: LA Auto Show Nov. 21-30

Automotive in LA, Culture in LA, Design in LA, Entertainment in LA, Shopping in LA by AMG

It seems last year’s show was just around the corner … but here we are again. And it’s not just with a new President-elect of course, the Los Angeles International Auto Show will serve as the platform for major auto manufacturers to unveil some of their latest goods … including Ford’s all-new 2010 Mustang. Now that the Dodge Challenger has hit the streets and the Chevy Camaro soon to follow, Ford has had to up its game (because the fact its flailing like a fish out-of-water wasn’t enough).

What I’m hoping to see there this year: Ferrari California, Bentley GTC Speed, Cadillac CTS-V, BMW all-new 7-Series, Maserati new Quattroporte + Granturismo S, Audi S4, and so many more.

LA Auto Show: November 21-30 (including Thanksgiving Weekend) @ Convention Center Downtown LA

Vote With Your Beer Gut!

Culture in LA, Politics in LA by Trisha

Barney’s Beanery makes voting fun and drunk! The pricing is fair, $3 per beer, but the beer that you vote with is not. Essentially the premise is that you either order a Stella Artois to symbolize your vote to McCain, or a Bud Light for Obama?!?!? Why can’t it at least be the other way around? Or have Obama be the Guinness? Their beer choices make the beer voting extremely hard. I mean, Bud Light embodies everything most of the world hates about American beer, and that is more closely analogous with McCain. And c’mon….$3 Stellas?!?! Who wouldn’t do that? So that’s it. My desire to see American change for the better is trumped by my love of good beer.

And I think I’m ok with that.

Election Night Par-har-har-har-tay!

Culture in LA, Education in LA, Event Planning, Politics in LA by Trisha

The buzz this week in LA is most obviously the elections. Do you know where your place of polling is? Do you know how you’re going to vote on EVERYTHING!?!?!?! Because if you don’t, you need to get on it! This is your city, state, and country, and if you don’t have your say, you have no one to blame but yourself when your little Paris goes up in flames.

But on to the fun stuff! There’s so much in the air that makes the 2008 election night as prime a night for partying as New Year’s Eve: all that change that now both parties are talking about, the polarization of voters, and all that depressing talk of recession, housing and job woes, etc, et al. So what’s an American to do but party while we’ve still got enough for a happy hour beer in our wallets?

And party you can at the Obama for America Election Night Gala at the Hyatt Hotel in Century City. Find all the details here!

New Awesome Band Alert: Swing Hailey

Art in LA, Culture in LA, Music in LA, Parties in LA by Trisha

The buzz in LA this week is sonic-alt-indie band Swing Hailey, hailing from Downey. Fans of nearly everything will find something to like about this band; but especially fans of Sonic Youth, the PIxies, Iggy Pop, all that new pop on 103.1 nowadays, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, etc, et all. They sound like an aural version of the Bloody Marys at the Golden Cafe in Burning Man: It’s a mix of a whole ton of spices, flavors, and other influences thrown into a blender on a chainsaw in the middle of a crazy party in a Tunisian-style tent in the middle of the desert; everything gets all mixed up together, and the end result is an ethereal, completely tangible yet indescribable heaven to your senses, to live in legend and infamy for the rest of days.

Catch Swing Hailey and all its awesome aural gloriousness at the next S.O.U.P Kitchen 4, along with S.O.U.P themselves, Custom Deluxe, The Last Holy Fools, and plenty of inter-band jamming. Fun times abound indeed! And it’s always considered courteous to bring a form of alcohol to share, beer is favored amongst S.O.U.Pers.

We Empower: The 2008 California Women’s Conference

Culture in LA, Education in LA, Entertainment in LA, Event Planning, Politics in LA by inhotpursuit

I’ve had a full day to digest all the information and events surrounding my attendance of the 2008 California Women’s Conference, and I’m still in awe.

14,000 women attended the event–which sold out in 3 hours!– championed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver.

Thanks to CVS Pharmacy, I was able to attend this inspiring event and witness first hand accounts of struggle and triumph, success and failure, and hear advice from some of the most powerful and influential women in the California, nay, the world!

I strongly recommend visiting www.californiawomen.org and watching the Webcast replay…but here are my conference highlights:

*My hometown hero Warren Buffett discussed the current financial state of our country with the governator.

*It’s official!!! Women can do it better!!!!! This according to Governor S himself, who credits his wife for being an excellent multi-tasker and is amazed by all she does (Oh, Arnold, I could have told you that!)

*Jennifer Lopez reminded us that nothing worthwhile was easy, a theme Maria Shriver touched on in more depth in the afternoon session by saying there is no courage without fear. I demonstrated this beautifully by getting a free flu shot at the CVS Pharmacy booth in the Village. I am deathly afraid of needles, and I did throw up in my mouth a little bit, but as the lovely Ms. Shriver reassured me, that fear allowed for courage!

*In the morning conversation, “So You Want To Start Your Own Business? How To Do It and Enjoy It!” Heidi Klum continued with the theme of courage. She faced people telling what she couldn’t do but she didn’t listen. She says you have to overcome your fear of failure and just GO FOR IT!

*Madeleine Albright signed copies of her new book, Memo to the President Elect

*Condoleeza Rice spoke of her gratitude to her parents, and told us that we don’t need to find a role model who is just like us. If that were the case there would never be any firsts. We don’t need to wait for someone to fill a role to show us it’s okay, we just need to do it ourselves! She was originally going to be a pianist and stumbled into international relations when she enrolled in a class that dealt with Russia–a place she had never been and knew nothing about–but this awakened a passion within her.

*Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi was candidly open and honest regarding the difficulty she faces balancing motherhood, family and career. Her anecdotes were enlightening, humorous and touching…she was hired to her first job wearing a Sari because she was given the advice: if they don’t hire you in the Sari–they don’t want you and what you stand for! Powerful!!! A second theme of the conference was being yourself.

*Maria Shriver left not a dry eye in the house as she told of her struggle to overcome her fear and her relationship with her mother. She spoke of her decision to back Obama–despite all the reasons she had to be fearful–her husband, a republican backing McCain for one!

*Jenny McCarthy, Mary Tillman and David Sheff spoke of their expereincs with trying, and seemingly impossible circumstances and shared with us how they pulled through. I had the pleasure of meeting Jenny McCarthy, who is such a brave and amazing woman–taking on the medical community!–and she signed a book for me.

*Gloria Steinam was honored with a Minerva Award, as was Billy Jean King who, thanks to Maria Shriver had to reapply her makeup 4 times because she cried so much throughout the day! She told the powerful story of facing off against a male chauvinist tennis champ on the most watched tennis match of all time–and winning!! But mostly she spoke of authenticity…of being yourself and being true to yourself at all costs.

*Bono entertained the crowd with his humor and congratulated women. He shared his causes of AIDS and hunger in Africa and asked us all to stand with him in the fight against these terrible circumstances that plague the people of Africa–where children die for lack of a 20 CENT VACCINATION EVERY DAY.

*Bonnie Raitt performed to an enthusiastic, if not tired (by this time it was at least 7pm!) crowd.

* I got bags upon bags of awesome swag and picked up a few great books….

I left this AMAZING day knowing that I myself would be an architect of change. I made resolutions to overcome my fears and dream bigger. I will make a difference like the amazing women who are shaping our world today.

**STAY TUNED FOR PICTURES FROM THIS AMAZING EVENT!!!!!!!

No Lip Vol. 1 West Coast Tour

Culture in LA, Music in LA, Parties in LA by Trisha

Ok. So the “tour” is a 2 stop weekend, Friday at the Mirror Image Studios in Anaheim; and Saturday at the Cobalt Cafe in Canoga Park. It’s put on by the band Soulfound, who have much to do with record label Mohawk Bomb Records, from Florida. Rest assured that this tour will have you pulling out all your old Pennywise, AFI, and Mighty Mighty Bosstones records (yes. records.) after the show, and drunk dialing all your buddies from high school to reminisce about the old days.

Bands are Soulfound, Bull Lee, 900 Lb Gorilla, The Business End, and New Skool Kings. Check out the music on Mohawk Bomb’s myspace, check out the youtube videos, and the pics of the bands playing in the photo album. You’ll get the sense that yeah, the music’s a bit of a throwback, but none of the bands playing that music care. It seems like all the bands are just out to have fun, they probably all have day jobs and aren’t looking for any kind of music career to speak of; these guys just want to get up on stage, go batballs crazy, make a lot of noise, and have many many raucous beers with the other bands after their set, and show all those 13-years-olds (it’s, um…it’s all ages.) how the pit’s done old school.

Anyway, if you’re looking for a completely refreshing alternative to the usual overcontrived, overwrought, and overhyped LA music scene, make the drive, drop by, and remind yourself why you fell in love with music in the first place.

Volunteer at the S.O.U.P Kitchen, Nov. 1

Art in LA, Culture in LA, Music in LA, Parties in LA, Uncategorized by Trisha

The buzz this week in LA is Glendale’s upcoming S.O.U.P Kitchen en las Dias de la Muertas, Saturday Nov. 1. It’s hosted by a cavalier band of experimental noise makers, band S.O.U.P, who have been known to draw comparisons to Sonic Youth…….on acid, Built to Spill………on acid, and Pink Floyd…….on even more acid.

It’s a backyard BBQ in its base form, but it’s the most gosh-darn fun backyard BBQ that I’ve ever been to. S.O.U.P. sets their own equipment up for open jamming between bands, there’s a psychedelic sculpture garden, there is beer…. and lots of it, and if you stick around long enough, tipsy band members from all manner bands will scurry up to the instruments, and create the most wonderfully odd versions of original and cover songs.

Por ejemplo, at S.O.U.P Kitchen Take 2, members of What’s Their Name?, Jed’s Dead, and S.O.U.P temporarily banded together to take the audience on a wild, captivating, mind-melding head trip of “The End”, by the Doors. Oh - and speaking of crazy-arse covers, don’t miss S.O.U.P’s version of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. They usually play first, so get there early to catch it. It’s what would have happened if Queen existed in dank, smoked-out and tuned-in basements of suburbia 1960s.

Check out their myspace for more info - see you there!
