The Jackets from Bern played the Bassy Club last week, and tore up the stage, 60’s revival-style with almost-matching black outfits with white trim. I had only heard the Jackets previously on Myspace, and somehow though they had a bit more of a 60’s groove. So the inner punk rawker in me was thrilled to see them blend 60’s garage soul with 70s punk effortlessly and with all the energy of a Gulf Coast hurricane.
They started the set with a bang and kept up their 5th gear pace throughout the entire set, plus a handful of encore songs. The singer’s got more than enough explosive, awkward energy to carry the rest of the band; and with her wailing, bellowing, and howling vocals, she really adds an extra ‘3′ to the 1-2 punch that is The Jackets’ set.
The whole set went to 11, making it hard at times to differentiate between songs – their set is solid enough, but it made me curious to see what else they could musically do besides song after song of mid-tempo 60s soul punk. They were extremely interesting to watch – remember the party people in Dr. Frank’s mansion in the Rocky Horror Picture Show? It as if the Jackets are the house band at their neighborhood bar – The Jackets are at once rockin’, awkward, frenetic, goofy, and fearless; making the overall experience as fun and as off-kilter as they are. Solid show, solid band.
On an unrelated final note, I must say that the Bassy Club has the best jukebox I’ve ever seen in my life. This assertion is based solely on the jukebox’s inclusion of the little-known Collins Twins, who play the craziest skiffle and honky-tonk of all time. In their own way, the Collins Twins were punk before punk was punk. Much love to the Bassy Club jukebox.
